Brothers In Arms Hour of Heroes : Ipod/Iphone Game Review

Brothers in Arms has always been a well made, successful series (my favourite being Hell's Highway) so it's no surprise that there's now a title on the AppStore, HOH has managed to squash many of BIA's features into the tiny Ipod/Iphone and to be honest they haven't done too bad.
The game takes place in WW2 and a variety of locations like Africa and Normandy, there is no real story other than WW2 so don't expect deep characters and sad moments. The game has 13 missions in which you can use a variety of weapons, none being too much different from each other and the ability to drive tanks which is quite enjoyable, however the rest of the game isn't too much so; sure the shooting feels punchy and realistic but the controls are ridiculously hard to use, it involves you swiping the screen to move the camera instead of an extra analog stick and pinching the screen to zoom which is widely uncomfortable. You can never run properly as there will be so many sandbags blocking your way you'll have to either weave around or spend a second climbing over, however it is very satisfying popping Nazis in the head but the same can't be said for blowing up tanks with a bazooka (which should be awesome), you'll constantly be shouting, kicking and screaming as you die due to the awful controls. The graphics of BIA HOH aren't the best either however they do pull through just about, there is no speech during missions other than the yells of other soldiers as they fall dead, the frame rate is possibly the games worst thing about it... if there are more than two people on the screen it drops below 1 frame a second (if that's possible) and you'll scream as it recovers and you find yourself unable to react and dead seconds later.

Overall BIA HOH isn't the worst game ever however it is not worth the price, maybe £1.20 if it's not too much of an insult to Gameloft, the controls are dreadful, the sound isn't great, there's no emotion, the frame rate sucks, but there is plenty of fun to be had in this third person shooter.

BIA HOH gets a 6 out of 10.
